The Barong Dance

This play represents an eternal fight between good and evil
spirits. It's done every morning in several villages with a beautiful
gamelan ensemble. This is an excerpt from a trance dance called the Calonarang,
which is traditionally performed only as a communal exorcism after an outbreak
of disease or disharmony in the village.
The gamelan music makes the performance seem quite hypnotic, which makes it easy
to see how one could fall into a trance after experiencing it.

This is the village we did most of our clothes shopping in. This is also where we met our friend, Dewa Pica, who was our tour guide/taksi driver for most of our vacation. In this picture, several people are heading towards the temple to bring offerings to the gods and goddesses.
